Meet Trish Hughes Kreis
“I care for my brother, Robert, who is disabled due to lifelong intractable epilepsy. Robert is 48 years old and has tried numerous anti-epileptic drugs, had two surgeries and participated in research studies for the Deep Brain Stimulator and Vegus Nerve Stimulator yet his seizures continue on an almost daily basis.
“Because Robert is my sibling, caring for him is not included in the protected leaves provided by FMLA and CFRA. But now, thanks to a new law, Paid Family Leave has been expanded to include caring for siblings.
“I am fortunate that my employer has worked with me while I juggle Robert's numerous neurology and other medical appointments, day program searches and meetings as well as the inevitable hospitalizations. Not everyone has such an understanding employer and that is why I work with other caregivers and the California Work and Family Coalition to expand job protections and Paid Family Leave to benefit all caregivers.”
